Suhareka

The municipality of Suharekë/Suva Reka is located in the south-east part of Kosovo. The municipality has an area of 361 km2and comprises 3.3% of Kosovo’s territory. It borders with the municipalities of Prizren, Rahovec/Orahovac, Malishevë/Mališevo, Shtime/Štimlje, Ferizaj/Uroševac, and Štrpce/Shtërpcë. It is comprised of 41 villages plus the townof Suharekë/Suva Reka.1In the post-conflict period, the municipality has been noted for the continued high level of LDK influence in local affairs and municipal government.

An estimated 90% of houses throughout the municipality suffered some form of damage (categories I to IV), and destruction (category V), during the conflict. Others were burned in the immediate post-conflict period, as Suharekë/SuvaReka’s small Serb population joined the exodus of Serbian forces.

Suharekë/Suva Reka’s pre-conflict population of approximately 80,000 included roughly 3,000 Kosovo Serbs and a smallnumber of Roma. No Kosovo Serbs remained despite the fact that half used to live in Suharekë/Suva Reka town with theother half living in the outlying villages of Mushitisht/Mušitišt, Popovlan/Popolane, Dvoran/Dvorane, Mohlan/Movlane, Sopi/Sopina, Leshan/Lešane and Reçan/Rečane. At present 505 members of Ashkali community live in Suharekë/Suva Reka town and in the villages of Gelac/Geljance, Trrnje/Trnje, and Leshan/Lešane while 25 members of Romacommunity reside in the town.

Almost 80% of the population rely on agricultural activities as a primary source of income.
